Product images

Product images let your customers know what your products look like. You can upload as many images per product, as you like. It is also possible to embed images (and videos) into product descriptions to provide even more details to your customers.

You can set the image size and orientation of product thumbnails in your store with the help of several preset design options in your Sauecommmerce admin in Design.

You can upload as many images as you want for each product. Sauecommerce supports JPG, PNG, and GIF images in RGB color mode for your products. You can also upload the WebP format.

Each image can be up to 20 MB. If you add heavy product images, they are automatically compressed, so your products load fast and fit well on both desktop and mobile.

Although there are no strict rules on the image size or resolution, there are some tips to make your product gallery more appealing for visitors browsing your store.

• Try to use at least 1000px size images. The larger the size is, the better quality the image will have both on desktop and mobile. 

• Show the various perspectives of the product such as front, side, underneath, close-up, etc., so customers can see what they are buying in detail.
• The most appealing image proportions for human eyes are 1:1, 3:4, 4:3, 2:3, 3:2. Choose which one is better for your products and try to stick with it.
• Use a consistent aspect ratio and orientation for all the product images in a product gallery. That will help to avoid visual clutter in your storefront.

You can add an unlimited number of images to every product in your store. We recommend using JPG, PNG and GIF images in RGB color mode for your products.

When you add multiple images to a product, the first uploaded image is considered the main — it shows as a product thumbnail on a category page and that's the first image shown on the product page. To change the main image, drag a different image to the first place. You can also sort the other images by dragging them. Customers will see images in this order in the storefront.

To add images to a product:

Once images have been added, customers can see them in your store. To change gallery layout appearance, go to Design → Image Gallery thumbnails. For Instant Site users: go to Website → Edit Site → Store → Product Page → Image gallery layout or to Website → Edit Site → Featured Products → Design tab (if you're using New-Gen Instant Site).

You can also add videos into product or category descriptions. 

If you sell products with options (such as color or size), you might want to add different images to different product options. You can do it by using product variations. You can add only one image to each variation. If you want to show more images of a variation, just add them to the main product gallery (or in a description).

To add an image to product variation:

That’s it! The image is added for the option. If you have several options, repeat the steps above for all of them.

Alternative text allows you to describe images for search engines and visually impaired users. It also displays if the image fails to load. This way, alt texts help users decide on a purchase and improve your site ranking, making it easier to find your products via images online.

By default, a product name is used as alt text for each product image. You can provide your own text instead.

To add alt text to a product image:

1. From your Sauecommerce admin, go to Catalog → Products.
2. Click on the product you want to edit.
3. Hover over the image.
4. Click Actions → Edit Alt Text:
   
5. Enter your alt text. For example, “Full-length dark-haired girl wearing a long blue denim skirt and a white top.”
6. (optional) Enter alt texts for other product images.
7. Click Save.

That’s it. You’ve added alternative text to a product image.

You can easily add or update product images in bulk using Sauecommerce's Bulk Product Editor tool or via CSV import. If you feel more comfortable when working with a ZIP file, then you can use the Bulk Gallery Upload app and contact us to get the link

The most common image protection technique is to place a visual copyright watermark on the image. By adding your logo or a mark on top of your images you can deter people from copying them. And if they do, it’s free publicity for you!

There are plenty of online services that you can use for watermarking your images, e.g.:

• uMark

If you are acquainted with Adobe Photoshop, you can use it to watermark your images as explained in the guide.

When you add a product to your catalog and do not upload any image for it, your Sauecommerce store automatically shows a gradient image as the product’s thumbnail in grid:

You may want to remove or hide product thumbnail images from the product list for its more compact look. In this case you can show just product names without images:

To hide product images from product grid:

1. From your Sauecommerce admin, go to Design.
2. Scroll to Product Card details and layout.
3. For the Main product image setting select Do not show.

The changes will be autosaved.
